This category looks interchangeable and is not. Each product assumes a different level of function, and buying on price means buying the one that assumes the most.
Shower stool
A simple seat, no back, no arms. For somebody who walks into a shower unaided and needs to sit because standing for the duration is tiring.
Cheapest, lightest, easiest to store. Offers no support for getting up, which is the limitation.
Shower chair with back and arms
The same thing with support. The arms are what matter: they are what somebody pushes up from, and a chair without them asks somebody to stand from a low seat with nothing to hold.
For most households this is the right product rather than the stool, and the difference in price is small.
Transfer bench
The one that changes the most. It straddles the tub edge, with two legs inside and two outside, so somebody sits down on the outside portion and slides across rather than stepping over.
Stepping over a tub edge is the riskiest single movement in most bathrooms: one foot in the air, wet surface, nothing solid to hold. A transfer bench removes that movement entirely.
If somebody has a tub rather than a walk-in shower, this is the first thing to buy.
Sliding transfer bench
A bench with a seat that slides along the frame, so somebody is moved across rather than shuffling. For somebody who cannot shift their own weight sideways, or where a caregiver would otherwise be doing it.
More expensive, considerably easier on both people.
Rolling shower and commode chair
A wheeled chair that serves as a commode, a shower chair, or both, and can be pushed between them.
For somebody who cannot walk into a bathroom at all, this is what makes washing possible without a hoist. It needs a level-entry shower or a wet room to roll into, which is the constraint.
Check two things before buying: whether it fits through the bathroom door, and whether it fits over the toilet if it is meant to.
Sizing, which matters more than the category
- Seat height: feet flat on the floor, knees level with hips.
- Seat width: supportive rather than swallowing.
- Weight capacity: an actual figure, not an estimate.
- Legs adjustable and locking, with non-slip feet in good condition.
- Frame width against the narrowest doorway, for anything wheeled.
What goes with it
A handheld shower head is the companion to every product on this page. Sitting under a fixed head is miserable, and turning under running water is where people slip.
A grab bar at the entry, non-slip matting, and a hook at seated height for a towel. The Access Board publishes the technical requirements for bathing rooms, which are a sensible benchmark even in a private home.
When equipment is not enough
Where somebody travels seated in a wheelchair and cannot get over a tub edge at all, no bench bridges it and the answer is a level-entry shower. That is construction rather than equipment, and our wet room guide sets out what it involves.
Try the equipment first unless the person is clearly past it. A transfer bench and two grab bars answer the question for a great many households, and if they do not you have lost very little.
Stools, chairs, benches, commodes, matting and handheld heads all ship free from our online shop.
Bariatric and heavy-duty options
Standard shower chairs and benches carry ratings that people routinely exceed without checking, and a plastic frame failing under somebody in a wet bathroom is the worst outcome in this category.
Ask for the rated capacity and compare it to an actual figure. Heavy-duty and bariatric versions exist across every product on this page, with wider seats and stronger frames, and they are worth specifying rather than hoping.
Maintenance, which takes two minutes
- Check the leg locks are engaged and the height matches on all four.
- Check the non-slip feet for wear; worn feet on wet tile are a hazard.
- Check plastic seats for hairline cracks around the leg sockets.
- Rinse and dry after use to slow mineral buildup in the frame.
Cracks around a leg socket are the failure point on plastic chairs and they are visible well before anything gives way.
Storage between uses
A bench that lives in the bath is used. One that has to be carried in and set up each time is used less, and eventually not at all.
That is a real factor in choosing: a folding chair that stores neatly may be used more often than a better fixed one, and a wall-mounted folding seat solves it entirely where a wall is available.
For a caregiver
If somebody is being assisted, the room has to hold two people and the helper needs to be beside rather than behind. A sliding transfer bench does more of the work than a plain one and saves a caregiver’s back over months.
Say at the survey that a caregiver will be in the room. It changes the layout and it is the detail most often left out. Our bathroom guide covers the rest, and the Access Board publishes the technical requirements worth using as a benchmark.
Trying before buying
Sit in it, stand up from it, and if it is a bench, practice the slide across. Ten minutes tells you more than any specification, particularly about seat height, which is the measurement that decides everything else.
Our showroom is walk-in during opening hours. If that is not practical, take the four measurements in the sizing section against a dining chair the person already finds comfortable, and order against those.
What to buy first
If there is a tub, a transfer bench. If there is a walk-in shower, a chair with a back and arms. Then a handheld head, then a grab bar at the entry, then matting.
That order addresses the riskiest movements first and it comes to a few hundred dollars. All of it ships free from our online shop.
Commodes and the overnight question
A rolling commode chair is one answer to nighttime bathroom trips. A static bedside commode is a cheaper one and removes the journey entirely.
Neither is a pleasant conversation and both are considerably better than a fall at three in the morning on the way to a bathroom. Raise it plainly rather than waiting for somebody else to.
Bedside commodes, liners and all the seating on this page ship free from our online shop.
